Nậm Chiến 3 Hydropower Project (Mường La District, Sơn La Province) takes water directly downstream of the Nậm Chiến 2 tailrace channel to utilise the remaining head of approximately 7.5 m between the Nậm Chiến 2 tailrace water level and the normal retention water level (MNDBT) of the downstream Pá Chiến reservoir. The project was completed and began generating electricity in 2018.
The inlet channel extends approximately 55.9 m from the end of the Nậm Chiến 2 tailrace channel to the intake structure. This channel includes 01 emergency spillway bay measuring 6.5 × 4.0 m, designed to pass the full Qmax discharge from Nậm Chiến 2 without raising the Nậm Chiến 2 tailrace water level in the event of a generating shutdown.
The powerhouse contains 02 bulb turbine units (Capsule, S-type), with a total installed capacity of 3.1 MW and average annual generation of 10.6 million kWh. Rated head: Htt = 7.5 m; rated discharge through the generating units: Qmax = 47.51 m³/s.
