Séo Chông Hô Hydropower Expansion Project (Sa Pa Town, Lào Cai Province) was developed to maximise the use of inflow at the dam site and minimise surplus water discharged over the spillway. It is a diversion-type hydropower plant sharing the dam and water conveyance system of the existing Séo Chông Hô plant. Water is diverted immediately upstream of the existing penstock bifurcation. The expansion project began generating electricity in 2022.
The expansion plant penstock section is 65 m long, with D = 0.5 m and a wall thickness of 40 mm.
The expansion powerhouse contains 01 horizontal-shaft Pelton turbine unit, with an installed capacity of 8 MW and average annual generation of 16.68 million kWh. Maximum generating head: Hmax = 863 m; maximum design discharge through the generating unit: Qmax = 4.38 m³/s.
In addition, during 2011–2013, VCE supervised equipment installation for the existing project. This project has a very long penstock and a very high head. The penstock has D = 1.1 m, a length of 2165 m and wall thicknesses ranging from 10–34 mm.
